Batavia Park District Spring Classes

Technology Adventures with COMPUTER EXPLORERS:
Preschool children will be explore exciting computer activities in a small group setting, using a laptop computer and educational software. According to the Pediatrics Medical Journal, “Computers boost pre-schoolers’ intelligence. Children with ready access to computers scored an average of 12 points higher on IQ tests”. Our programs encourage reading readiness, math readiness, creativity and teamwork, to help prepare your child for kindergarten and the future. Our classes help to develop socialization skills and encourage students to work with others. Each session will provide new learning activities.

IT’S A SMALL WORLD
It may be a small world but with our digital microscope, we will be able to see it in action! Our young scientists will observe & collect information about natural & manmade specimens as they learn more about the microscopic world around them. Using digital editing techniques, students will explore how to change these specimens into creative works of art.

INTRO TO DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
Students will enter a digital photography center to experiment with using digital photos to create puppets, movies, special effects and more! First we will learn how to take a good digital picture & then we will practice fun digital-editing techniques as we create our projects. This course offers young students a chance to practice Language Arts & Reading Readiness skills in a fun & exciting way! Students will receive a copy of their creations after class is complete.

Once Upon a Comic Book (NEW)
Write and design your own comic book tales about princesses, goblins, genies or superheroes. Create your own characters (even scary looking monsters!) for your comic book scenes. Fun-Gineering With Simple Machines
Using Lego™ Educational kits, budding engineers will learn about simple machines by building models of real-life devices such as a folding lawn chair, a car, drawbridge or a conveyor belt.   They will learn about the concepts of pulleys, levers, wheels and axles, and gears and bring their projects to life using battery operated motors.   Through the building of realistic motorized models, students will develop an understanding of mechanical principles.   They will explore, investigate, and solve problems in a fun group environment.  2 children per LEGO® kit.

Video Game Design
Dive into the world of video game animation by creating characters that dance, sing and interact with one another. This national program has been developed by educators to engage inquisitive minds and has been featured on CNN and in Parents Magazine. Children will explore exciting computer activities in a small interactive group, using a laptop computer and educational software. According to the Pediatrics Medical Journal, “Computers boost pre-schoolers’ intelligence. Children with ready access to computers scored an average of 12 points higher on IQ tests”. Our programs encourage reading readiness, math readiness, creativity and teamwork, to help prepare your child for kindergarten and the future. Students will experience new learning activities in each session.

Animal Adventures with COMPUTERTOTS
In this fun and educational class, children will learn about animals using a combination of computer software and crafts. Students will work in small interactive groups to explore exciting activities using a computer and two different software programs during the week. Through these computer activities, they will discover different animal traits and will learn about animal babies, animal homes, animal care & animal sounds among other fun facts. They will also use problem solving & discovery techniques as they build readiness & computer skills. They’ll use their creativity and imagination to create animal puppets and creature books which they will take home at the end of class.

Digital Moviemaking & Storytelling
Let’s make a movie together! We’ll sing songs, tell stories & learn how to use a digital camera as we create our own masterpieces. We will do it all - from filming the movie & downloading it to a computer to storyboarding & adding special effects. Watch out Hollywood - we are on our way! Students will get a CD-ROM of their creations after class ends.

Basics to Building
Young children love to build - and building is a great way to enter the world of engineering! Using Lego™ educational sets, we will explore simple machines by building fun moveable models while learning the basic concepts of physical science & engineering in a fun and creative way. 2 students per lego set.

Green Screen Moviemaking Adventures (new)
Climb Mount Everest, swim the depths of the ocean, or battle dinosaurs! Using a green screen and special photo-editing techniques, you will venture into real or imaginary locations and film the trip to share with friends. Experiment with photos and unique drawing software to set the scene for fantastic adventures. Don’t stay at home – jump into a green screen and find yourself some fun! Each student will get a copy of their movie on a DVD.

Inventions With Art and Technology (NEW)
Jumping Jiminy Crickets! The newest in robotics and programming fun is the Pico Cricket®. Students will work in teams of 2 to design and create their own creatures, sculptures or 3-D art, and then program them for action! Make a cat and program it to purr when someone pets it. Make a bobble-head with multiple heads that jiggle and jump on command. Make a birthday cake play a song when someone blows out the candles. Your imagination is the main ingredient!

Robotics Adventures (new)
Yes, We CAN learn about Robotics! With the LEGO™ WeDo Robotics System, young children can build and program their own robotic creations. Designed by the experts at MIT, this unique system teaches children about simple machines, engineering, programming and so much more. Young imaginations soar! Students will work in teams of 2 per robotics set.
